1 Kings chapter 12 records the process by which the kingdom of Israel was divided into north and south when Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, rejected the people’s request to lighten their heavy yoke. The ten northern tribes made Jeroboam king, and Jeroboam, to protect his own kingship, set up golden calves at Bethel and Dan and changed the priesthood, the feast, and the system of sacrifice at his own will.
